COPS Office Releases: Understanding Firearms Assaults against Law Enforcement Officers in the United States

This publication attempts to answer important questions regarding firearm assaults against law enforcement officers. Initially prepared as a framework for discussion in the 2014 Officer Safety and Wellness (OSW) Group roundtable dedicated to identifying best practices for reducing firearm assaults and ambushes, this publication reviews the group's findings on law enforcement policies, procedures, training, and agency characteristics that can reduce officer deaths and injuries.

Soldiers Getting Junctional Tourniquet Designed to Save Lives

The U.S. Army Medical Materiel Agency (USAMMA), a subordinate command within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC), is fielding a new junctional tourniquet designed to save warfighters from dying on the battlefield after injuries to the groin or armpit area.

Small Agency Body-Worn Camera Policy and Implementation Program

The FY2016 Small Agency Body Worn Camera (BWC) Policy Implementation Program will support the implementation including the purchase, deployment, maintenance, data storage, and policy development of a body-worn camera program, and the necessary policies for law enforcement agencies. The program will play a critical role in the creation, implementation, and evaluation of problem solving approaches that incorporate BWCs into officer practice in selected jurisdictions.

Paramedics to no Longer Wait and Stage during Active-Shooter Situations

During a mass shooting – paramedics normally wait outside while the suspect is still at large. Traditionally, it’s only members of law enforcement who enter the so-called “hot zone” in these scenarios, and firefighters and paramedics wait until the area is secured.

However, that is precious time that an injured and bleeding victim waits for help. “We can’t wait hours while people are in the corridor dying while we’re waiting for bad guys with guns to be removed,” Omaha Asst. Fire Chief Shane Hunter said.

Emergency Management Personnel Get Green Light to Carry Firearms

A resolution to allow personnel from the Pittsburg County Office of Emergency Management to carry firearms has been locked, loaded and passed.

During their regular Monday meeting at the Pittsburg County Courthouse, county commissioners voted to approve an amendment to the county's Personnel Policy Handbook regarding firearms and an acknowledgment/waiver form. They also approved a resolution allowing personnel from the Office of Emergency Management to carry personal firearms in county vehicles and on county property, where authorized.

Michigan Police: Uber Driver Killed Six in Rampage

A shooter who killed six people and injured two others in Kalamazoo on Saturday was an Uber driver who appears to have gunned down people at random during a four-hour rampage, authorities said.

Police are investigating reports that the suspect gave a harrowing ride to one passenger just an hour and half before the shooting began and that he may have continued picking up fares during the shooting spree.

When fired Los Angeles police officer Christopher Dorner went on his killing spree it drew the largest law enforcement response in San Bernardino County history — until the Dec. 2 terrorist attack at the Inland Regional Center. Law enforcement agencies from across Southern California, led by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, hunted Dorner after he implicated himself with an online manifesto in two murders.

Base Ensemble Offers Greater Protection for First Responders

The goal of the Base Ensemble Project is to develop an improved duty uniform designed to provide first responders with better protection from the many hazards they encounter in their daily duties. In partnership with the project performers and the United Kingdom’s Home Office, S&T is testing different prototypes and garment materials to produce a final product. Emergency first responders often encounter unpredictable and dangerous environments when responding to calls.
